Say What? Language Diversity in the U.S.

The Washington Post wrote this week about the languages we speak at home, measured at the county level across the United States. While about 80 percent of U.S. households are English speaking, there are large pockets of households with other dominant languages.

Namely, the Post reported that almost 13 percent of Americans (a total of almost 37 million), speak Spanish at home; "Not surprisingly, Spanish speakers are concentrated near the U.S. border in counties in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California."

But beyond this well-known prevalance of Spanish-speaking Americans, the article shares county-level data about Asan-Pacific languages, Indo-European languages, and Native American languages. Highly recommended as an fascinating look at the spatial distribution of language diversity in the United States.
